Reconnect with Yourself Through Nature
For thousands of years, people have turned to nature to reflect, grieve, celebrate, heal, and seek clarity during life's most meaningful moments. Today, a growing body of research supports what many people instinctively experience: spending time in nature can help reduce stress, restore attention, and support emotional well-being. Nature-based therapy brings these benefits into the therapeutic process while remaining grounded in evidence-based psychotherapy.
At Inner Balance Counseling, we offer both traditional office sessions and nature-based therapy, including walk-and-talk sessions in nearby green spaces.
What Is Nature-Based Therapy?
Nature-based therapy intentionally incorporates the natural world into the therapeutic process. While many sessions take place outdoors, nature-based therapy is much more than simply meeting outside. It is a thoughtful integration of evidence-based psychotherapy with the restorative qualities of natural environments.
Research suggests that spending time in green spaces may help reduce stress, improve mood, restore attention, and promote overall psychological well-being. While nature is not a substitute for therapy, it can create an environment where many people feel calmer, more present, and more open to meaningful reflection and growth.
Sessions may take place in the office, outdoors, or as a combination of both, depending on your preferences and clinical needs.
Walk-and-Talk Therapy
Walk-and-talk therapy is one way to experience nature-based therapy. Instead of sitting across from one another in an office, we meet outdoors and walk together at a comfortable pace while engaging in the therapeutic process.
Many clients find that walking side by side feels more natural than sitting face-to-face. Gentle movement can make it easier to organize thoughts, process emotions, and discuss difficult experiences.
Sessions are never about exercise or hiking. The focus remains on therapy, with walking simply serving as another way to support the work we're doing together.
Why Choose Nature-Based Therapy?
People are drawn to nature-based therapy for many different reasons.
Some appreciate having an alternative to the traditional office setting. Others notice they feel more relaxed and grounded outdoors. Many simply enjoy slowing down, moving their bodies, and reconnecting with the natural world while investing in their mental health.
Clients often describe outdoor sessions as:
Relaxed and conversational
Grounding during stressful seasons of life
Supportive of mindfulness and emotional awareness
A welcome break from screens and busy schedules
A space where difficult conversations feel more approachable
The changing seasons, natural landscapes, and living ecosystems can also become meaningful metaphors throughout therapy, reminding us that growth often unfolds gradually and that periods of change are a natural part of life.
Who May Benefit?
Nature-based therapy may be a good fit for individuals experiencing:
Anxiety and chronic stress
Depression
Burnout
Grief and loss
Relationship challenges
Major life transitions
Chronic illness or persistent health concerns
Difficulty slowing down or feeling present
It may also be a wonderful fit for anyone who feels energized, restored, or inspired by spending time outdoors.
Meet Your Nature-Based Therapist
Nature-based therapy at Inner Balance Counseling is offered by Josh Wayne, LMSW, MPH.
Long before becoming a therapist, Josh spent years leading educational hikes throughout Georgia, helping thousands of people discover native plants, fungi, ecology, and the interconnectedness of the natural world. Through that work, he witnessed something he now sees reflected in research: spending time in nature often helps people slow down, become more present, and reconnect with themselves and those around them.
Josh earned both his Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Behavior and his Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia. His background in public health continues to shape his therapeutic approach by recognizing the important connections between our relationships, environment, behaviors, physical health, and emotional well-being. He is especially interested in how nature-based experiences can support overall health, including emerging research on phytoncides released by trees, the ways contact with soil may support the microbiome, and the connections between the gut-brain axis and chronic illness.
Today, Josh integrates evidence-based psychotherapy with his lifelong passion for nature. Depending on each client's goals, therapy may incorporate:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Mindfulness-based interventions
Gottman Method principles for relationships
Attachment-informed therapy
Nonviolent Communication (NVC)
Values-based and nature-informed practices
Whether sessions take place in the office or outdoors, Josh's goal is to create a collaborative space where clients can deepen self-understanding, navigate life's challenges, and reconnect with what matters most. Together, you’ll choose the setting that best supports your goals, comfort, and therapeutic journey.
What to Expect
Every therapeutic journey is unique.
Some clients choose to meet outdoors every session, while others alternate between office visits and walk-and-talk sessions depending on the weather, privacy needs, accessibility, or the topics they wish to explore.
Before beginning outdoor sessions, we'll discuss confidentiality, safety, accessibility, and any other considerations so you can make an informed decision about whether nature-based therapy is right for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is nature-based therapy evidence-based?
Yes. The psychotherapy itself remains grounded in evidence-based approaches. Nature serves as a supportive therapeutic environment that may enhance relaxation, attention, and emotional well-being for many people.
Is walk-and-talk therapy right for everyone?
Not always. During your consultation, we'll discuss your goals, comfort level, physical accessibility, privacy considerations, and whether outdoor sessions are an appropriate fit.
Will people hear our conversation?
Protecting your privacy is always important. Before meeting outdoors, we'll review confidentiality considerations and adjust conversations whenever others are nearby.
Do I have to meet outdoors every session?
Not at all. Many clients enjoy alternating between office sessions and outdoor sessions depending on their needs.
